We Choose Not to Participate in the Great Recession
27 Mar
How does a business keep from being part of ‘The Great Recession‘?
While speaking with a good friend of mine the other day, Scott Targett of Targett’s Windows and Doors, he mentioned something that really stuck with me. While addressing his entire staff recently during a company wide meeting, he made the announcement that Targett’s was choosing not to take part in the 2009 recession.
I loved this statement. Personally, I believe that recession is 90% mental (Of course, something things cannot be overlooked, but a lot of what I believe we’re seeing is consumer psychology affecting business and markets). Once a team starts believing that they are in the middle of a recession they may start accepting that its normal and ok for a revenues to decline – creating a feeling of conformity..I say, don’t accept this fate! Don’t let the onslaught of possible declines hamper your ability to innovate, try new things, and motivate your team to cultivate new ideas. By choosing not to participate in the 2009 recession, I believe that you’re setting yourself and your team up for success.
Remember the great words of Henry Ford; “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re probably right”.
What are you doing to maintain or grow your business this year? More importantly, are you allowing your team to choose this as an option?

Surprisingly the uk economy shrank a further 0.4% between July and September (the last quarter that there are figures for), so the end of the downturn is a long way off yet – another 6 months at least i reckon, its the longest recession since records began 50 years ago and it wont be till years later the economy and property market recovers, it was’nt until the late 90’s that the property market recovered after the 89/90 recession.
Our country was also hit hard by the Economic Recession. At least we are seeing some signs of economic recovery now. I hope that we could recover soon from this recession.
