Having A Bad Work Day? Don’t Even Think About It
21 Apr

Can you honestly say that you’ve never had a bad day at work in your life?
These words were said to me recently by a gentleman I know very well. He recently retired from a huge multinational corporation where he worked most of his life. He ran international divisions and was tasked with buying companies and leading divisions throughout Europe for his company.
Speaking about business one day, he uttered those words; “I never had a bad day at work in my life.”
After hearing this phrase from him, I had to go deeper. I knew that he had faced some real challenges throughout his career. We talked about the days when he had to deal with staff issues and I asked him “What about days when you had to let people go? Come on, you must have had some bad days?”
He told me it was easy. “I loved every aspect of business, including the personnel management. I loved days when I hired people and gave them new opportunities. I loved days when I made changes to staffing that resulted in stronger teams and stronger people. Finally, he said. “I even loved the days when I had to fire people.”
His reasoning was simple. By making the tough decisions and taking the necessary actions needed to strengthen a team, a manager or owner is doing both their company AND their staff a huge favour. By not making those tough decisions and taking action, many company owners put their company at risk, and end up keeping their “C“ Player in a position where they cannot thrive and succeed.
Stating those words also had deeper meaning. He genuinely believed in what he was saying. And if true – if he really never did have a bad day at work – that only meant that he was playing to his strengths almost 100% of the time. No much wonder he was so successful in both his position and influencing his company’s performance.
Can you honestly say that you love each day you come into work? Can you see the opportunity in every challenge that you face in your business?
